In late June, we booked a half-board package through a major reservation platform, and the experience was truly horrible. The hotel is in a fantastic spot beside beautiful Towdako lake, but the meals were below average at best for a 3-star rating. The worst part came at checkout: the front desk woman insisted we pay cash. After paying, we saw a notice in Japanese saying credit cards were welcome. I immediately messaged the platform’s customer service to complain, but haven’t heard back, and I can’t leave a review for the hotel on the platform. I learned not to rely only on reviews posted on hotel booking sites, since they have a conflict of interest.

Right by the lake, this place is amazing and worth every penny. Be sure to get the dinner package. It’s a hidden gem in Japan.

The location is fantastic, and the food was wonderful. We chose the half-board option and looked forward to every meal. What I’ll remember most about Lake Towada is the service. The hotel seems to be run by older people who give very personal, meticulous attention. They do their best to make you comfortable and really make you feel at home.

It’s near a beautiful lakeside, but the building feels quite old and there’s no elevator. The meal was elaborately presented, though the flavor was bland.

The building seemed old, but it was all clean. It’s right on Lake Towada, with a hot bath, or onsen, and staff who were very nice and tried their best to help. Dinner and breakfast were both really good, in a ryokan style.
