Crowne Plaza ANA Kumamoto New Sky by IHG

There are two restaurants and parking is easy, and the rooms are comfortable with good amenities. Staff were very friendly and helpful. The Crowne Plaza is centrally located on the river with a tram right out front, though I walked everywhere. There is no pool or onsen.

The WiFi was very temperamental, and later that evening the only staff member on shift didn't speak any English when I called reception. They also had to leave the desk unmanned whenever they went to help a guest. For an IHG hotel I find that unacceptable. The room smelled old and damp, which just isn't acceptable, and the bed squeaked with every move. It's been a while since I've seen such an outdated crowne plaza, down to a wardrobe with a curtain instead of a door. The smell alone would make me say to find somewhere else. This isn't a hotel anyone should or can recommend. It was a bad start when I couldn't get into my room. I was in a rush and only wanted to drop my bag and get changed, but had to go back to reception and waste time changing my key. The receptionist came up with me; only his key opened the door. He let me into the neighboring room and prepared a key for mine later. Worst hotel I've ever stayed in in Japan!

Everything was well organized, and the room was spacious. The helpful, friendly staff made it a comfortable stay, and the whole experience felt pleasant and relaxing. Definitely a great place to stay.

The staff were great and very helpful, and the hotel was nice and well located. Our room was comfortable, though it was a bit cold in November. We also regretted that the TV was so old and had too few channels.
