I’d happily come back. The staff were great, especially the woman who stored my luggage and later checked me in. She was kind and attentive to all my questions, even though I was only there for one night. My room was comfortably spacious, with a modern, easy-to-use bed, and the bathtub was lovely on a cold winter night. The location worked really well too, close to Sakuramachi bus terminal, where I arrived from Fukuoka airport, and near the Shimotori arcades for food and shopping.

After staying at this hotel brand in Okinawa and liking the concept, I booked the same brand in Kumamoto. The self check-in and check-out are very convenient. It’s well placed for walking to Kumamon Square, Shimotori Shopping Arcade, and Kumamon Village. There’s no hotel parking, so drivers need to use nearby public lots. Rates are pretty reasonable, depending on the area.

Sotetsu Grand Fresa Kumamoto has all the basics covered, and the rooms are a little larger than the average Tokyo room. It’s clean and close to the shopping arcade, which gets lively on Friday and weekend nights.

The room was clean, well kept, and comfortable, and the English-speaking staff made check-in and communication easy. The hotel is just steps from the main shopping district, which is a very convenient base for exploring. It was crowded with tourists, though, and the common areas could feel chaotic. If you want a peaceful stay, expect some bustle because the place is popular. I also had trouble with the laundry: the washing machine took an unusually long time to dry clothes, which was inconvenient. I’d recommend it if you want to be in the middle of the action and don’t mind crowds. Keep the laundry issue in mind for a longer stay.
