We stayed one night at the grand base. The location was excellent, around five minutes from the historical quarter and a 10-15-minute walk from the station. The room had two large beds that could be pushed together, a small sitting area, and a kitchenette with a portable burner, kettle, and microwave. Basic utensils were there, but no dishcloths or paper towels. It was quiet, and everything else was clean, although there was a surprising amount of dust under both beds and the couch if you moved them. I hadn’t received an email with check-in instructions, so I had to switch on roaming and call from my phone. They helped quickly over the phone, and self-check-in at 3pm was simple. You get the room entry code once the check-in is done. Keep in mind it’s an unmanned hotel, with nowhere to leave luggage before or after check-in.

We arrived at 3:30 p.m. and found several stains: an orange, food-like mark on the bed, what looked like dried urine on the toilet seat, and a long black hair by the sink. Since check-in is at 3 p.m., there had been a five-hour window to clean, which makes this first impression especially unfortunate. We also had to check out before 10 a.m. and, because it was raining, couldn’t leave our luggage until 3 p.m. There’s no reception to raise any of this with, even though the listing apparently says that service is available until 9 p.m.

We arrived around 8 PM and got a quick reply to our email, with clear instructions for entering the hotel. Self check-in was easy: use the tablet inside, enter your details, and complete a video call for verification. Checkout was just as smooth. Check your email for the instructions after booking, and contact them straight away if they haven’t sent them, so you don’t end up waiting outside. The room was cozy, with a small living area and enough space to open our luggage comfortably. We stayed on 25 Feb 2025 and found it good value. GRAND BASE Kurashiki Chūō is about a five-minute walk from Kurashiki Bikan Historical Quarter, making it easy to see the area by day and at night. Parking is paid and limited, so if it’s full you may have to park farther away. There’s a lot next to the hotel, but it’s for apartment residents. Don’t park there or you could be fined.

You get a full apartment here, with a bedroom, kitchen, bathroom, and small living room. The facilities are modern, very clean, and high-tech. Having your own kitchen and laundry is convenient, and you don’t have to worry about cleaning staff coming into the room. It also gives you more freedom with your schedule. It’s more like an apartment Airbnb than a hotel, with no staff on site. You check yourself in and out on the iPad by the entrance, using codes sent with your booking by email. There’s no lobby or luggage storage. The transit station, Imahashi bridge, walkways, and shops are all a short walk away.

We slept really well in the comfortable bed, and watched a few movies on the fairly new TV through Netflix. The unit was clean, spacious, and good value, more like a studio than a hotel. It had a small kitchen with utensils, a cutting board, a knife, and a microwave. The design had Kurashiki Bikan touches, including denim pillowcases. Check-in was self-service, first online and then by scanning a QR code at the machine. It was quick, but only two machines were available and one was out of order, so we waited briefly while another family checked in. Parking was very limited. We’d secured a nearby spot, but later in the evening there were already lots of cars waiting for space. We cancelled our plan to drive out for ramen and a supermarket trip because we didn’t want to lose our spot.
