Kurashiki Den - Traditional House

We were three, two adults and one child, so we stayed in the smaller self-contained downstairs area instead of renting the whole house. It was cozy enough for us, beautifully presented, very clean, and reasonably priced. Having a kitchen, dining table, two tatami rooms, a modern bathroom, and sliding doors and a window onto a small traditional garden made it much better than a plain hotel room. There was lots of lovely timber throughout. The directions from the train station were easy to follow, and a friend of the owner met us at the house. The location is handy, just a few minutes' walk from the edge of the historical district. The traditional Japanese home has been beautifully renovated with modern conveniences, and staying there was a great way to experience Japanese living, including sleeping on futons. Kurashiki was easy to get around, with a beautifully maintained, walkable historic district. It was a little touristy, understandably, and probably the cleanest village I've visited in all of Japan. Highly recommended.
