I’ve stayed at Kotomi a few times for crab, and this time I came back after a while because I wanted squid. I’d seen reviews saying the food was meager, so I was a little worried when I booked, but my husband and I were completely satisfied. We chose the course with freshly caught morning squid served whole as sashimi. By the time the beef shabu-shabu came near the end, we were full, and the nakai turned the leftover rice in the pot into rice balls for us to take along. I suppose it depends on the course and the date, but I thought it was worth the price. The Tango craft gin Warigen, which you don’t often get to try, was delicious. We’ll be back in winter with my parents for crab. Looking forward to it!

I chose this inn during Golden Week while traveling around the Chugoku region, with my flight home the next day in mind. Dinner was a plain, standard kaiseki meal that left me wondering what makes a ryokan a ryokan. Then I ordered a chuhai and it arrived in a glass the size of one for cold water, filled to the top with ice, at the usual hotel price. I even had to ask, “Is this a regular chuhai?” I’ve stayed at many places, but I’d never been served one in a cold-water glass before. This felt like a rip-off. It’s a ryokan in name only.

I come every year for the full crab course, and it always leaves me completely stuffed. On weekdays, it’s nice that the open-air bath can be used privately. The building does feel a little old.

The hot spring is my favorite part of this inn, and the water temperature felt just right for me. I came in winter hoping to enjoy crab, but I couldn’t finish it, so they gave me a whole boiled crab to take home. From my room, I couldn’t see the sunset over the sea, one of Yuhigaura’s attractions. I also appreciated the man who bowed and saw me off until the elevator doors closed.

Dinner was meant to start at 6:30 pm, but after it began we waited over 15 minutes for drinks while they grilled the crab. There wasn’t any water, and the kids kept saying they were thirsty, so I lost patience and went down to the first-floor vending machine to buy drinks. The boiled crab was a small one that had just molted, with no claws and no sanbaizu, and it wasn’t very tasty. When I asked about the sauce, they said, “We can give you some if you need it?” It was the same story with the claws. I was so irritated that I couldn’t enjoy the meal. After I scolded them, they left water in the room where the futon was laid out, but by then I felt sick and couldn’t drink it. The inn is extremely old and run-down, with the corridor lining peeling away. Service was zero, and this was the most infuriating experience I’ve had. Work depends on QSC, Quality, Service, and Cleanliness. Service was especially lacking, and quality isn’t just about quantity. Maybe some guests are satisfied with that, but people expect value these days. It wasn’t even that cheap. Seriously, everyone, don’t stay somewhere like this.
