Kyoto Taizaonsen Sumiheiryokan

We treated ourselves to one night here and a private onsen. The service was great, and we hadn’t expected so many staff members to speak English too. Definitely worth staying if you’re in the area or passing through.

Our first trip to Kyototango, in northern Kyoto, was really peaceful, with lovely ocean views. The staff’s enthusiasm was clear from the start: someone showed us where to park, then at reception we were offered welcome drinks and a sweet. They explained all the hotel facilities while guiding us to the room. There are six private onsens, five free and one that requires a reservation and fee. Other places to relax include the dining hall, a reception lounge with free sake, and a nearby lounge with a magnificent ocean view where you can sit with sweets, snacks, beer, or wine.

The private onsen room had a wonderful view and was clean and well furnished. The bed sits on a small platform, though, and it's easy to miss that step at night. It could be dangerous for elderly guests, and I hope the hotel improves it. The crab alone is worth coming for. It was freshly prepared and unlike any crab I've had. Forget the crab dish at Kani Doraku. All in all, a wonderful stay.

Getting there was a little tricky, but the seaside setting was worth it. It’s so peaceful, with stunning views and amazing staff.
