The train station is only a few minutes away, with a 7/11 and Familymart close by and great restaurants just around the corner. This charming, modern machiya was home to my family of five for five days, and we loved coming back after full days out discovering Kyoto. Highly recommended.

Comfortable, clean, and in a great location, with a lovely little garden. This beautiful traditional Japanese residence was easily the best place we stayed in Japan. Highly recommend.

We had a lovely first stay in a machiya, and two nights felt much too short. Next time, I’d like to try another house from this group. The downstairs dining table made evenings especially cozy. We picked up inexpensive ready-made meals at the supermarket and sat around eating, drinking, and chatting. There’s also a TV, plus a small counter, microwave, knives, and pots for preparing fruit. The place was clean and well equipped, with a wooden interior that keeps its old beams while adding modern decor and amenities. Getting around was easy: Kyoto Station is about a 10-minute walk, and a bus stop three minutes away goes to places like Gion. The upstairs sink has a wide counter and mirror, so two or three people can get ready at once. There’s one bathroom and two toilets. A few things felt cramped. The upstairs bedrooms are small, and suitcases don’t fit under the beds. The stairs are narrow, so take care carrying luggage. The washer-dryer is only 7 kg and may not dry a full load, though I washed some underwear before bed and put it away the next morning. The lighting is mostly indirect and a bit dim, which made reading or looking at my phone for long stretches tiring. Also, the first-floor garden-facing window looks into the bathroom, and there don’t seem to be curtains. When someone showers, they have to shut the wooden door over the tall window. A pretty odd setup.
