Gion Koh - Hostel

The price felt so low for the level of service. The location is amazing, with beautiful streets around it and a chance to take a peaceful late night stroll in Ninenzaka. The kind man running the family house carried our suitcase, made us feel welcome, and even let us leave our bags after checkout. Thanks so much for having us.

We’ll always remember this honeymoon. Hiro-San was incredibly kind, and we won’t forget how well he looked after us. The hotel was clean, the staff were kind, and the service made our stay as pleasant as possible. It’s also in a good location. We’d definitely recommend booking here.

The shared kitchen was a real bonus, and I loved the decor throughout the house. It’s an old-style Japanese home in central Gion, with must-see sights nearby. The courtyard garden and koi pond were enchanting, and Hiro, the owner, can offer sightseeing advice. He’s lived in the West and speaks French, English and Spanish. The Wi-Fi password changes depending on where you are, which was the one small inconvenience, though the connection worked fine. Easily one of Kyoto’s most beautiful places to stay.

We loved the cozy living room, where it was nice to relax with tea, and the little inner garden had lots of books to read. You can also cook in the kitchen, and tea was waiting in our room. Our room had enough space even with two suitcases, and towels were replaced daily while the bedroom was tidied. We were unsure about the shared bathrooms at first, but they turned out to be easy to use and clean, with hot water day and night. The whole house felt warm and distinctly Japanese. The location is right in traditional Kyoto, and Hiro, the owner, speaks English and helped whenever we needed it. We visited in early November 2025 and had a wonderful stay.
