Kenji made our stay feel easy from the start. He was friendly, responsive, flexible, never pushy, and full of useful recommendations. The house is charming, with simple Japanese-style rooms that are lovely and well equipped. We were right by the station, with shops and places to eat next door, and only a few minutes on foot from Tenryu-ji, the bamboo forest, the river, and views of Arashiyama mountain. Such a calm, cute neighborhood. We absolutely adored it and would happily recommend staying at Atagoya.

Everything we needed was there, including towels, shampoo, a kitchen, fridge, washing machine, and microwave. The owner was kind and welcoming, too. A clean, affordable ryokan with easy access to Arashiyama!

The rooms are Japanese style, with tatami and basic amenities, and it's a good option for travelers on a budget. We got helpful tips from the friendly owner, who speaks English quite well, including suggestions for local places with fewer tourists and restaurants. JR saga-arashiyama station is only around a 3-minute walk away, which is handy if you have big luggage. The bamboo forest, Tenryu-ji temple, and other famous sights are all within a 15-minute walk.

The lockers at Saga Arashiyama station were all taken, so we found this place on Google while heading to Kyoto and stopping in Arashiyama for the bamboo forest. We hadn't stayed here, just used the luggage storage. It's very near the station and cost 800 yen per bag. Worth it, since otherwise we wouldn't have been able to look around Arashiyama.

Kenji helped us with a map of Kyoto and pointed out places we could visit. He was so hospitable that he even walked us back to the train station at the end of our trip. The place was clean and comfortable, within walking distance of the station and the area with lots of sakura trees. Great value for money, and it really felt like a home away from home. Highly recommend.
