The rooms are fantastic: clean, well organized, and stocked with everything you could need. The host is super friendly and even helped with my luggage at check-in. It’s a lovely spot in Kyoto if you want to try staying in a Japanese-style house. I do wish some guests would show more consideration. The owner puts a lot of effort into keeping the place clean and enjoyable, but I was shocked by how many foreign guests had bad manners. Please clean up after yourself in the common room, follow the posted rules and don’t bring outsiders into the hostel, leave room for others in shared areas, and keep your voices down. Use earphones when watching TV or whatever. Honestly, I think some guests should be rated too, so people know what it may be like to share a room with them.

The book-filled common room was a real treat, especially for anyone into architecture, and the little tsubo-niwa added a lovely touch. My traditional tatami mat room at Itoya was spotless and so cozy, and I slept really well. They’d even left light snacks and tea for early risers like me. I’d wholeheartedly recommend this guesthouse.

A small, family-run guesthouse with a really pretty, cozy wooden traditional Japanese house. I loved staying here for a few days in Kyoto. There are, I think, two or three private bedrooms, plus a five-bed shared dorm, and the bathroom and shower are shared. It’s a bit away from the center, but public transport serves it well.

Kuba, the host, was exceptionally friendly and worked hard to make sure we felt looked after. I’d highly recommend this place for an authentic stay in Kyoto.

The host was pleasant, and I had a really fun stay. Expect a full Japanese hostel experience: the dorm room can get noisy, though everyone knows about the quiet hours. The bathroom and showers are outside, so keep that in mind. The location is nice, but food places close early, and it’s far from downtown if that’s where you want to be. I’d definitely stay again when I’m back.
