This whole-property rental in Kyoto's Ohara Village was made from a wealthy farmer's mansion built about 250 years ago. The main house is for dining and relaxing, while guests stay in the annex, which also has the spa. It includes a cypress bath, an open-air bath, a mist sauna, a high-temperature sauna, and a cold water bath. Massages are part of the accommodation fee, and there’s a tea room with a resident teacher where guests can take part in an authentic tea ceremony. Meals cost extra. Options include authentic Kyoto cuisine, Western food, Chinese food, and other dishes to fit different budgets. Pick-up and drop-off are available from Kokusaikaikan Station on the subway. You can also ask to use just the main house and tea room for the day.

We were invited by Hachikan. It takes just one group per day, with the whole inn available for up to eight people. It’s surrounded by private homes and rice fields, so it suits adults who want to enjoy their time there without going out. The package price covers food, drinks, a tea ceremony, sauna, and beauty treatment. The food was made by the chef of Motokitcho. Our tea ceremony was in the Yabunai style, though that seems to vary by day. The chef made the Japanese chestnut manju by hand. They were soft, filled with red bean paste, and sweet without being too much. They were so good I wanted several. There’s a loyly sauna as well as a mist sauna, which is the one that doesn’t give off mist.

I just saw this place featured on the TV news. They apparently specialize in a steam sauna called Thermarium. A friend of mine runs a guesthouse in Ohara, and I’d love to check this place out too! 😊 It’s limited to one group of up to eight people per day, though, and the rate is 800,000 yen a night. 💦
