We celebrated our 15th anniversary at Hiiragiya, staying in Room 19 in the Main Building, which was built over 200 years ago. The room and its corner garden were beautiful. One rainy night, I sat by the window listening to the rain. After busy days in Kyoto, it felt like a hidden oasis. The attendants were so polite and accommodating, and every staff member helped make this a lifelong memory for us. Arigato Gozaimasu.

The people who work here were all so lovely. I had long conversations with several staff members and the manager, and everyone was warm, helpful, and good-natured. The food was amazing too, and I recommend the 9 course sampler. It’s in the heart of Kyoto, within walking distance of Potoncho alley, a good dinner spot, as well as trendy clothing stores and sites. I spent four peaceful nights here, staying in both the newer and older wings. Both were beautiful, though I preferred the bathroom and huge wooden soaking tub in the newer room. The old room’s bathroom was a little musty, but that room had a lot of charm and looked out onto the lovely interior garden. The futon was so comfortable that I photographed the mattress and duvet brands and am trying to find them in the United States. I miss soaking in the tub and lying on the futon watching rain fall on the trees. I honestly wish I could live here. It’s a culturally and historically authentic inn that has been in the same family for generations. The first three photos are from the newer room, the next three from the older room, and the last shows a corner of the dining area.

I travel a lot, and this was easily the best place I’ve ever stayed. Yukino was incredible and made my time in Kyoto. The whole staff was amazing. It’s hard to explain how special this place is, truly exceptional. I can’t wait to return!

The Japanese dinner and breakfast were delicious and felt very authentic. We spent one night in Room 33, a very large room in the historic part of the hotel, and enjoyed the hot spring in the room and wearing the Kimono/Yakuta. Hatsune, our room attendant, was so sweet, and her English was pretty good. I’d really recommend giving this place a try when you’re in Japan.

The evening with Kyoto’s traditional geiko entertainers was a rare highlight. It was hosted with real grace and gave us a meaningful glimpse of Kyoto’s cultural heritage. The whole ryokan had a peaceful, refined feel, so it was easy to slow down and enjoy being there. The meals were beautifully presented and full of seasonal Kyoto flavors. From the moment we arrived, the team took care of every detail with warmth and quiet attention. We left with a stay we’ll remember fondly, and hope to return.
