The Kaiseki meal was the highlight of my stay. The seventh-generation MasterChef, Izutsu San, carefully chooses and prepares seasonal ingredients, and every dish arrives like a work of art. He also takes time to explain the meal’s history and how it’s made. His pride in his family and place comes through, and the staff share a real desire to give guests a taste of Japanese culture. They surpassed even their own expectations. At Izuyasu ryokan in Kyoto, I enjoyed an authentic Japanese stay with a calm atmosphere and modern conveniences. The staff spoke English, and the omotenashi, or hospitality, was exceptional. Each day I was welcomed by someone friendly who seemed genuinely eager to help. My room was warm, quiet, and spacious, overlooking a garden. The thick futon was comfortable, and the leisurely private hot bath soothed both my muscles and my mind.

The location was really convenient, and I wish I could have stayed longer. The rooms were very clean, had everything I needed, and were quiet. I also liked that the onsen bath was clean, since I’m not usually keen on shared pool or bath spaces. I booked the dinner and breakfast option, which I’d recommend if you’re a foodie wanting to try traditional Japanese meals. The omakase was surreal, delicious, and filling. I was struggling by the time dessert came around. I’ll definitely come back.

My husband and I had a wonderful two-night stay at Izuyasu, with attentive staff who accommodated all our requests. I’d recommend this beautiful inn to anyone visiting Kyoto.

We booked the Kaiseke dinner for one of our two nights, and I’d highly recommend it. It was our best dining experience in Japan. The stay was perfect, the jewel of our trip.
