The building is set up in a really interesting way: art fills the basement and first floor, artists live and work on the second and third, the hostel is on the fourth, and just a few individually designed hotel rooms are upstairs on the fifth. At check-in, you can choose a piece from the front gallery to hang in your room while you’re there. Our room was clean and roomy, with a comfortable bed, AC, dehumidifier, mini fridge, kettle, speaker, and projector for movies or TV. The staff were friendly and polite, and the location was great. We stayed three nights and loved the place, especially its cool creative feel. It’s not a traditional hotel, and I liked it even more for that. I’d recommend it to anyone staying in Kyoto.

I felt completely at ease in my little room, listening to music and having coffee. The place is clean and has a distinctive atmosphere, with thoughtful details, good service, and welcoming people. The owner is wonderful, and the hospitality is exceptional. There’s so much artistic imagination here, and the care put into everything makes me want to come back. I’ll definitely return.
I’ve met so many lovely people here through my work, and I really like this place. If you want to meet artists, have conversations, and see another side of Kyoto, Kagan is a good fit. There are plenty of art hotels, but this one gives you a chance to connect with people and explore the local part of the city. They also serve delicious curry every Friday and Saturday.
It’s a very cute hotel, close to the wholesale market, where you can catch a different glimpse of real Japan. The design is simple but still very comfortable. Staff were friendly and helpful, including when they accommodated my late check-in. I’d definitely come back.
The lockable bedroom doors were reassuring, even though the guesthouse floor is mixed-gender. I spent one night there because it was cheap and looked stylish, and I only needed somewhere to sleep. Check-in was self-service, and the bathroom, shower, and toilet were shared. They did provide toothbrushes and bath towels, which I appreciated. It’s near a wholesale market, so in the morning there were lots of unusual cars around. The nearest convenience store takes about 10 minutes to reach on foot, so bring supplies early if you need them. The area is very dark and there’s not much around, though it didn’t feel unsafe. It was a weekday with few guests, and I heard little noise, but sound did echo. For an experienced traveler looking for a bed, I think it’s fine.
