'Kakishibu-an' Machiya Holiday House

I loved this place. It was incredible, and the host was such a gentleman.

Walking around Kyoto from this townhouse was easy. Shijo Kawaramachi Station and Nishiki Market are both within walking distance, and there’s a supermarket nearby. The entrance can be tricky to spot, but the receptionist gave us clear directions and landmarks, so we barely got lost. You do have to walk everywhere, though, which may not suit anyone who wants to rest as soon as they get off a train or bus. We spent two nights and three days here, in a part of a traditional townhouse where people actually live. It felt like we were living in Kyoto, and we had a wonderful time. Without the Go To Travel campaign, this would usually have been out of our price range. The old-fashioned doors, stairs, layout, and cupboards gave the place charm, while the renovated room was clean and the bathroom seemed new. We were concerned it might be cold, but the heating kept us comfortable. Anyone looking for a completely old-fashioned interior may find it too modern, but we enjoyed having the townhouse atmosphere. Check-in was straightforward, with reception a few minutes' walk from Kyoto Station, and the explanations were easy to follow. They accommodated our requests for amenities. We could leave one bag per person at check-in, so we could sightsee on the first day without luggage, and we were grateful that our bags were delivered to the townhouse. The building carries sound, so as the staff explained, shouting or running around isn't suitable. Staying up drinking noisily with friends would be difficult. It seems best for a quiet, restful visit. The bathtub is roomy enough to stretch out in, though the washing area is a little tight if someone is coming in or out while you're using it. It was only a minor inconvenience for me. Most amenities were supplied, but there were no pajamas, so bring your own. Some things, including nail clippers, apparently aren't lent out now because of COVID-19 precautions. It was a very pleasant stay. Thank you.

I slept really well because the bed was so comfortable. The room was clean and warm, and I felt safe walking back after a late night in Shijo. The inn is in a very convenient spot, and it's a townhouse I'd happily choose again whenever I visit Kyoto. The large tub took a while to fill, and the water seemed a bit cool. The bath controls were also a little complicated, but I got to enjoy the bath comfortably, so it wasn't a real problem. I'd definitely like to return.

The neighbors were friendly and welcoming, which made the place feel like home, even though Nishiki Market and the Gion area are only a short walk away. The old townhouse has been renovated beautifully into a modern Japanese-style facility. We stayed one night and were very satisfied. It would work for a longer visit too, but it's a luxurious space and the price reflects that. We got a 50% discount through the Go To Travel campaign, which was lucky. At the regular rate, one or two nights would be manageable for me, while a longer stay would be over my budget. I'd like to try one of their other townhouses another time.
