Chika was such a sweet and helpful host. She sent us Kyoto sightseeing suggestions well before our arrival, and there was complimentary fruit and water waiting in the fridge. Midweek she brought more water and fruit, plus a bottle of white wine. She also makes traditional Japanese breakfasts, either fish or vegetarian, with six or seven dishes on a tray. It was delicious and cost only $10. We loved our nine nights here. This is a traditional Japanese townhouse about 100 years old, with modern conveniences. It was February and temperatures dipped to 30 degrees F at night, but the heating kept us warm. The beds were comfortable, and the side street was quiet. There are four rooms: a bedroom, living area that could be a second bedroom, kitchen/dining area, and bathroom. A washer/dryer is included. The wood, wallpaper, and beautiful floor mats made the inside feel cozy. The location is superb, about 700 yards from the lovely and important Kiyomizu-dera temple, with great shopping just a block away. Several other major temples, shrines, and shopping areas are within a 30-minute walk. Kyoto Station and Kyoto Tower are about a 45-minute walk, or a 10-minute taxi ride for $11.

Chika's sightseeing suggestions were tailored to the days we were in Kyoto, and she was incredibly helpful throughout. The traditional breakfast is well worth trying. Her little diner is adorable, and the food was delicious. We had so much room to ourselves, which was a welcome change after the tiny hotel rooms in Tokyo. Everything was very clean, and the kitchen had a stovetop, kettle, microwave, fridge, and more. My partner and I loved our stay. Fantastic place, highly recommend. Thank you, Chika! Ben and Josie

Chika san went out of her way to help plan our whole stay, and quickly felt like a friend. Her traditional cafe downstairs served delicious food and had that old Kyoto vibe. We were a family of five with three kids, so we had to plan carefully. The townhouse was spacious and spotless, with authentic Japanese charm and plenty of modern touches. It's on a quiet little street but within walking distance of temples, shopping, and restaurants. We'd absolutely return and highly recommend Kiyomizu Shukuba. It worked well for a family like ours, or just a few people.
