This review is a little overdue, but Komachiya was easily our favorite place to stay during our recent trip to Kyoto. It sits in the charming Showa-era Furukawacho Shopping Arcade near Higashiyama Station, a great location for exploring while still feeling peaceful and local. Under its iconic lantern-lit roof, the covered arcade blends traditional Japanese daily life with modern cafés and artisan shops. That mix of traditional charm and thoughtful modern comfort also describes Komachiya. We were lucky enough to experience a local event that weekend. We were a family of eight, and the home accommodated us wonderfully. Every detail made our stay comfortable, relaxing, and memorable. The well-equipped kitchen, washer and dryer, and plenty of towels were thoughtful touches. What made the experience especially memorable was the hosts' kindness. After we left, our youngest daughter accidentally forgot her favorite stuffed animal and travel pillow. The hosts went out of their way to arrange for them to be sent to us in Tokyo. Their generosity and care meant a great deal to our family, and we will never forget it. We are very grateful for their hospitality and would absolutely stay here again on a future trip to Kyoto.

We stayed in this Kyoto house for a few days and could not have chosen better. The hosts were exceptional, always available and quick to respond when we needed anything. When we arrived, they welcomed us warmly and explained the house and its surroundings. They also gave us a map full of useful tips about getting around and finding restaurants, convenience stores, and transportation. That level of care was especially helpful for visitors from abroad. The house exceeded our expectations. The photos do not convey how spacious and comfortable it is. There were two adults and two children in our group, and we had plenty of room, with two large bedrooms, each with a small living area, and two bathrooms, including one on the same floor as the bedrooms. Everything was spotless and well maintained. The amenities were excellent, including a washer, dryer, iron, and everything else we needed to feel at home. Thanks to the warm hospitality and attention to detail, it really felt like visiting a distant relative's home. The location is very convenient, close to major subway stations with connections to Osaka, and within walking distance of Gion, Pontocho, Nishiki Market, and several famous temples. In the evenings, we enjoyed walking along the Kamo River, just a few minutes away. Another big plus is that the house entrance opens onto a charming local covered market, similar to Nishiki but quieter and more intimate. It is a pleasant place in any season, rain or shine. Just behind it are peaceful little canals to explore on foot, a hidden gem where you can enjoy Kyoto away from the crowds while staying close to the main attractions. We wholeheartedly recommend this place to anyone wanting to experience Kyoto with great comfort, convenience, and genuine Japanese hospitality.

This is an awesome little home on a really cute street with shops and restaurants, just a few steps from the subway. It has traditional Japanese features such as tatami and sliding doors, with very soft futons on raised tatami floors. There are good heaters, a full kitchen with everything you need except food, a washing machine, and a nice dining area. The downstairs bathroom is incredible and looks out over a small but beautifully kept outdoor garden. The owner is very helpful.

What an amazing place to stay when visiting Kyoto. It's an antique Japanese house with a small garden out back, two floors of traditional tatami rooms, and plenty of space for guests. Their craft beer bar is down the street, so it's easy to try some local beer before turning in. The relaxing, comfortable, cozy atmosphere makes this a must-stay!

Lovely place. The hosts were kind and welcoming, and the home was very well located and really, really quaint. It made for a unique and memorable stay.
