A nice hostel for a stop in Kyoto, close to the Gion district. I stayed four nights without any issues with the owner or his cat. I’m allergic and hadn’t known about the cat when I booked. The room was clean, and I found the floor mattresses more comfortable than the hotel I’d just stayed in. The owner showed us maps of the area and gave us a quick tour so we knew where the showers and bathrooms were. I believe all the rooms are upstairs, so it may not suit elderly guests or anyone wary of steep steps. Otherwise, it was a nice hostel experience.

We really liked the location and the value for the 3 days and 2 nights we stayed at Kiraku Inn. The inn was well cared for, with beautiful maples covering the front. The owner was so friendly when I arrived an hour before my stated check-in time. He carried our heavy luggage upstairs and brought us refreshing iced tea. He was very sweet.

My room had apparently been overbooked, and I only found out one day before traveling to Kyoto when I happened to check my email. They didn’t call or send any other message. If I hadn’t checked, I would’ve had nowhere to stay. I had a bad experience with the booking and hope the hotel improves its booking management so this doesn’t happen again.

The owner was very nice. As soon as we arrived, he had us sit down and explained the attractions and how to get to them easily. It’s a traditional Japanese house converted into an inn. The toilet and shower room are shared.

The location is great, very close to the center. It was dusty in places, though overall clean. Check-out is at 10, and the owner will make sure you’re out by then, rushing you along.
