It's nice to wander these streets past local shops and restaurants, many with distinctive entrances. A good spot to escape the crowds.

The old streets are lovely to explore at an easy pace, with beautiful architecture and plenty of places to look around. I first passed through on a bike tour, then came back on foot later that day to take it all in.
Kamishichiken is said to be the oldest of Kyoto's five entertainment districts. The lantern designs there are based on the dango from a tea ceremony held by Toyotomi Hideyoshi in 1587 on the grounds of Kitano Tenmangu Shrine. He was so impressed by the dango at a teahouse that he granted seven teahouses the right to sell them.
This is Kyoto's oldest geisha street, with old houses along a very peaceful road.
The historic Main Street runs through a beautiful old Hanamachi area, lined with traditional houses and shops. With no modern overhead wires or neon, it really feels like stepping back in time. The maze of side streets and alleys makes the neighborhood feel intimate, and it's worth taking time to explore.
