Malda Kyoto

I came back for my second stay in June 2024, and it was wonderful again. I stayed two nights in the red room. It's very spacious, with heated floors, and the fibers and dishes are all from Jurgen Lehl/Babaghuri shops. Seeing those details made me think about what's missing from my own home. The staff are attentive and friendly, and the breakfast is breathtaking, lots of little dishes, with two completely different meals across my stay. There are nice shops nearby and the subway is a short walk away. I can't praise this place enough, and it'll be my go-to in Kyoto. Just remember this isn't a hotel with staff on site 24 hours a day, so let them know your plans. Thanks again for a fantastic stay.

We had such a lovely stay in a gorgeous studio at this boutique hotel. The practical things all worked, and the little details were a delight. Having Japanese breakfast served in the room was quite an experience. Thanks to the lovely ladies for making the whole visit so nice.

The rooms are beautiful and spotless, and I was thrilled to have such a huge space to myself. I was having a great time until checkout spoiled the end of my stay. I wanted to leave around 9:30 in the morning on my last day, store my bags, and catch a morning train to Enryaku-ji temple. There was nobody at reception, and the cafe was closed and locked, so I couldn't find anyone there either. A very kind, helpful woman had been at the cafe desk on earlier days, but she wasn't there then. I called the number they gave me, but nobody spoke English. I was frustrated and thought I'd have to carry my luggage to another hotel for storage. As I started walking out with my bags, a woman came out of the cafe. She seemed more concerned that I was leaving without checking out and paying my bill. I wasn't trying to avoid either, I just couldn't find anyone to help. She didn't apologize, though she did eventually offer to hold my bags. The whole experience left a bitter taste at the end of my stay at Malda.

We spent three days here on a trip through Japan, and I was blown away. Malda's studios are elegant and roomy, in a convenient location, and the breakfast service was custom and unbelievably good. The cafe is great too, and all the staff were welcoming and lovely. We stayed at 5* hotels during the trip, but I'd choose Malda over many of them.
