I spent two nights here without meals. It’s a traditional Ryokan hotel, so some things are old, but the place was clean and neat, and the people working there were respectful. There were a few small surprises too. I’d seen some low ratings from school trip kids, but nothing like that happened during my stay. For example, the public bath room was clean.

The staff were so kind and welcoming, helping with umbrellas, keeping my things in my room while I was still out and about, and anything else I needed. It was a great place to practice Japanese as part of the trip. Breakfast was fantastic too. I wish I’d added dinner, but I’ll do that next time I visit! My room had plenty of space and the quiet, peaceful feel I expected. I’ll stay here whenever I’m in Kyoto, and I’m already looking forward to coming back.

The traditional Japanese breakfast was always delicious, and having it in such a serene setting was lovely. We also found the onsen baths clean and relaxing, with instructions on how to use them properly. I was alone in the bath at the time, which made for a great experience. My boyfriend and I loved this traditional stay and enjoyed every moment. The staff were always so kind and welcoming. Our Japanese-style room in the main building was large for two, and we liked having room to spread out instead of living shoulder to shoulder. I also loved being greeted with tea each time we came back to the room. This will be one of our memorable moments from visiting Japan, and we’d love to stay again.

Really nice room and beds for my one night. The pillow was actually fluffy and comfy, unlike the firmer ones in some other places.

The buckwheat husk pillows were the hardest part for us. They felt like bean bags, and there weren’t any Western-style pillows. I was surprised not to see that mentioned in other reviews. Apart from that, it’s a cute, traditional old-style hotel in a great location, with big rooms. The rooms could use updating, with scuffs on the walls and fluorescent lights, but everything was very clean. When I was too tired to use the public bath, I felt fine using the tub in our room. The public bath was small and very clean, and I had it to myself. It was open for long hours, from 4pm to 1am for both sexes, separated, and also in the morning. The service and Japanese hospitality were excellent. One evening, a woman served us tea in the room and chatted with us. Each day we found a different little treat and origami in the room. We took our shoes off at the entrance, and they kept our street shoes in a closet. Breakfast was a big kaiseki meal, served in a communal room overlooking a lovely courtyard garden. The choices were early, at 7, 730, or 8, and each day there was a different protein, vegetables, miso soup, and rice. It was nice starting the morning with a traditional Japanese breakfast.
