Ougian Gion Shirakawa

I really liked how peaceful it felt here, even though Gion and the livelier parts of town were close by. The place had the comfort of having your own Kyoto apartment. The bath was a highlight, with an automated setup that made it feel fun and high-tech, and the provided amenities were good quality. I just wish the tea and coffee sachets had been topped up during the stay.

We had a ground-floor room overlooking the stream, and it was lovely. Inside, the bath and toilet were separate, and there was air conditioning, an air purifier, a big TV, and complimentary drinks in the fridge, including beer and champagne. The receptionist was very kind and helped us make a call to arrange something. We could borrow umbrellas too, and because it was raining when we left, they let us keep them. The Gion location worked well for walking to the center and the big market. I wouldn't let the small number of reviews put me off booking.

We slept really well, and being able to walk into town made this a perfect spot for us. The room itself was incredible, with clever use of space and thoughtful little details. It felt more like an apartment than a hotel. Just know that towels aren't changed and the bed isn't made. Finding the building was a bit tricky because the English translation didn't come through properly.

The room was spacious and clean, and I loved the design. It's in a lovely, quiet spot that still feels very central. I can't recommend it enough.
