The townhouse was beautiful and historic, with traditional character and modern amenities. It was clean, spacious, and very well equipped. Our luggage was sent from the check-in desk near Kyoto Station to the accommodation for free. A railway station, taxi stand, and several convenience stores were all within walking distance. The bathroom had a plumbing problem when we arrived: water wasn't draining properly from the shower, sink, or toilet. It took three days to fix after we reported it, and housekeeping should have caught it before we arrived. The front door lock was frustrating and may have been broken. We stayed in early April, and it was quite chilly because of the poor insulation, so I wouldn't recommend it in winter. Be aware of some very high steps and an extremely steep staircase.

The traditional houses are lovely and the location is amazing. It was a little uncomfortable, but the experience was worth it.

I chose this machiya townhouse for its miniature garden and stayed for a day as part of a remote work plan. The garden really is as beautiful as the photos. The place is stylish despite being a townhouse, and it has Balmuda appliances. You can open the garden-facing windows about 80%, so in good weather it feels like enjoying the garden from a terrace. The heating barely worked, which made the house very cold. The bathroom had its own heater and was probably the warmest room. There was also a separate foot heater, but it was only big enough for one person. We didn't use the second floor, so I can't say how it was, though it seemed to get more sun and might be warmer. There's an elementary school nearby and the walls are thin, so school-time noise made it hard to concentrate while working remotely. A delicious bakery is close by, making this a nice option for bread lovers or people staying multiple nights.
