Tanaka Gokurakudo Guest House

The owner was super kind, and the hostel is set up so nicely. You can use the kitchen, rent bikes, and leave your luggage downstairs while you explore Kyoto on your last day. It’s tucked down a little street and can be a bit hard to spot, but there are friendly policemen around to ask for directions. The train station is practically next door, with a mall right in front that has a 100 yen shop inside. From my window I could see Kyoto tower and the station at night, and from the back you can look out at one of Kyoto’s castles, though I don’t remember which one. This was my favorite hotel in Kyoto, it felt magical and was so convenient. I can’t recommend this hostel enough, it was a pleasure to stay.

The location and the whole idea behind this place deserve the high rating. The shared areas and rooms were clean enough, though I found the guesthouse unusually quiet for a dorm setup. Even opening the front door, walking on the wooden floor, or using the toilet and shower seemed to make too much noise. If you want that level of quiet for sleeping, it could suit you well. Just be ready to move around very quietly if you come back late after going out for food or sightseeing. 🤫

I stayed at a nearby property and was woken several times after 11 pm by guests from this hotel outside. They were shouting, playing music, drinking, and making a lot of noise. The owner should ask guests to keep it down at night. They showed no consideration for other people.

The host was so kind, and the place felt comfortable and clean, almost like being at home. It’s conveniently close to the station and Lawson. I really enjoyed staying here and hope to come back when I visit Kyoto again. 💕
