Such a welcoming, homey place, and the owner was lovely. I felt well looked after, especially when she left fresh fruit for us and was available whenever we needed help. I’d especially recommend it to women traveling on their own. :**

A charming little guesthouse with plenty of amenities. The owner was so sweet and explained everything clearly, which made our stay easy. She even left us a lovely bowl of fruit to enjoy the night before checkout. A great choice if you’re after a traditional stay in Kyoto.

We’d happily come back to Tanaka-ya. Our tatami room with futons felt spacious and comfortable, and the shared bathrooms and showers were consistently clean. The hostess was kind and easy to communicate with. It sits on a sweet traditional alley, near a metro line and several bus routes, and Gion’s busiest tourist area is about a 10-15 minute walk away. There’s a shared fridge, though no common sitting area.

The location made it easy to get around: the historic area and restaurant district are both about a 10-minute walk, and a 24-hour grocery store is around eight minutes away. The owner was lovely to talk with and even sent us tips about what was happening in the city the next day. Our room was a good size, cozy, and had comfortable beds. There was lots of tourist information on hand too. I’d stay again if I return to Kyoto. ☺️

The host was fantastic and made sure I was comfortable, even bringing me snacks. I stayed in this old traditional townhouse in the heart of Kyoto’s Gion district. The room was a decent size, and the street was peaceful at night despite being only a 10-minute walk from the main nightlife area. Definitely recommend it!
