A luxury Ryokan villa feel, with a private onsen and bathtub, made this a wonderful homestay. It’s very bear Kyoto Station, a few bus stops from the main areas, and walkable to kawaramachi in about 20-25 minutes. With hotel prices in Kyoto surging, this felt like a more affordable option for a similar 4-star vibe. I booked through airb&b, then realized it’s also listed on hotel.com. There aren’t any konbinis nearby, so it’s worth bringing snacks or drinks back on your way home after a day out. Mogami San kept the villa well stocked with amenities, and all guests get a lovely little bamboo Japanese chopsticks set as a goodbye gift. Highly recommend!

It was especially nice to return to this well maintained place after sightseeing. The bath felt luxurious, and they left us complementary snacks and drinks, plus a cool pair of chopsticks as a thank you. The house is tucked into a quiet neighborhood with lovely shrines nearby. A few bars, restaurants, and bus and train stops are within reasonable walking distance. P.S. If you’re a foreign traveler curious about sleeping on a Japanese futon, my fiancée and I tried them here and found them very comfortable. I recommend giving them a go if you’re interested.

The bath beside the central garden was so relaxing, and the amenities were excellent. It’s an amazing house in a great spot, right in the town center on a quiet side street. A bit pricey, but worth it.

We spent 5 days at The Besso Soso and will absolutely return next time we’re in Kyoto. It’s a beautiful place, and the staff were extremely pleasant. You’re close to everything, but it doesn’t feel like you’re caught up in the chaotic tourist scene.
