Tokuheian Hinoki

Hideo and Yukako were such welcoming hosts at Tokuheian. They made us comfortable and told us a lot about the area, and we were very happy with their hospitality. The old thatched inn is lovely. We bought dinner and breakfast, and both were among the best meals I've had in Japan. The deer hotpot and Tamago Kake Gohan were especially good, so I'd recommend trying both if you get the chance. And their two dogs, Daizu and Meme, were adorable. Dog lovers will be very happy. Enjoy the Keihoku region!

We felt welcome from the start, and enjoyed getting to know Hideo and Yukako during our three nights at Tokuheian. We were in the area for the Minka Summit 2022 at Hanase, an easy 30-minute drive away. They brought the nabe we requested right to our house, and breakfast was delicious, served in the lovely cafe just outside the front door. The house has utensils and cookware if you'd rather make your own meals, though you don't need to. Their two dogs are friendly and love attention. The Bernese Mountain Dog would literally sit on your foot, hoping for a head scratch. We had a great, unforgettable stay. Thanks!

The thatched roof house has loads of old Japanese character, but also the amenities you'd expect in a nice hotel, and it's all yours during the stay. Hideo and Yukako live across the driveway beside the "cafe house," where they serve amazing Japanese dinners and breakfast. They're happy to let you do your own thing, though you'd miss out on getting to know them. We cooked and ate together, laughed a lot, and had so much fun. I've visited Japan several times, and this was easily my best hosting experience. Yuka san used to be a sous chef at a michelin star Japanese restaurant in Kyoto and is happy to share what she knows. Hideo seems to know everyone in this quaint farming town outside Kyoto and has plenty of hobbies: growing mushrooms, vegetables, and rice, riding motorcycles, and helping run a little cafe. He can also show you ancient forests you wouldn't otherwise be able to visit, thanks to special permission. Their 3 friendly dogs made us feel right at home. What a magical place and fantastic hosts!

The hosts are what make this place so special. Hideo-san and Yukako-san have opened their old thatched-roof farmhouse to guests, and their hospitality was wonderful. We stayed one night and had a great time. The kayabuki is comfortable and has what you need, with a well-equipped kitchen and a very comfortable bed. Breakfast was simple and good. We'll be back!
