We felt lucky to stay in such a well-preserved historic wooden building. The old machiya has narrow hallways, low ceilings, compact rooms, and floor seating, all part of its traditional character. Our room used to be a storage space, with a clever wooden layout across two floors, though the stairs to the small upper bedroom were steep. The staff, including Kakuko and Kazushi, were warm and attentive. Kazushi was especially friendly and helpful with recommendations. Their hospitality made us feel welcomed by a generous Kyoto friend, and we could settle into traditional Kyoto life. The setting is tucked into central historic Kyoto, with stone paths kept in immaculate condition. Every part of the place shows care, from the entrance and subtle incense to the generous amenities. The narrow, deep layout also includes a breakfast dining area, a cozy library, and both private and shared Japanese baths. I especially recommend the baths as a meditative cleansing ritual. We slept deeply on dense futons over tatami, and the chef and staff served one of the most delicious Japanese breakfasts we’ve had, both in quality and presentation.

We still think fondly about our time at Toshiharu. In all our travels together, staying at this tiny Kyoto inn stands out as one of our happiest memories. You can feel the place’s history in its walls and floorboards, and the hospitality was wonderful. We’ll be back.

The old building has real historic charm, and inside it was spotless and clearly well cared for. My parents were very happy with the accommodation, and we loved our stay. The host gave us such warm, friendly guidance, the bedroom was cozy and relaxing, and breakfast in the morning was delicious. If we're back in Kyoto, we'd stay here again. Highly recommended!

We loved the traditional Japanese gardens, which blend naturally with the house and give the place a peaceful feel. The rooms let you experience traditional Japanese living, and breakfast was delicious, cooked by the owner's mother, who was very kind. The rest of the staff were friendly and lovely to talk with. This 160-year-old building is beautiful, and it was by far our favorite place on our trip to Japan. We'd highly recommend it to anyone visiting the area who wants an authentic Japanese lodging experience.

The private onsens were incredibly relaxing, and every staff member was so kind and friendly. I had a fantastic stay. If you're in Kyoto, I highly recommend this place.
