I enjoyed the friendly, helpful staff, the traditional rooms, and the nice foyer. The tea set and tatame flooring were lovely, and I found the basic hot bath upstairs relaxing for about 15 minutes. Sleeping was harder. The pillows were rock hard and very thin, which might be a traditional Japanese thing, but I struggled with them. I also couldn’t figure out how to switch off the heater, so I had to leave the window open overnight and it was noisy.

The location was convenient, just a short walk from Kyoto Station, and I’d happily return to Hotel Ryokan Wakamiya on another visit. We had a wonderful, authentic stay. The employees were so gracious and made us feel at home, and they spoke enough English to help us. Even if you haven’t stayed at a ryokan before, the rules are explained clearly, so it’s easy to get used to how things work. Our room had a private bath as well as the public baths, which were separated for nen/eomen. There were also hot water pots and extra bedding.

The hostesses were incredibly warm and kind, and I felt at ease with them. Some of the foreign staff spoke Japanese well. Breakfast wasn’t really to my taste, though my friend thought it was delicious. I might not go back myself, but if you’re reading this, maybe give it a try. By Himiko

If you want the feeling of visiting your grandma’s house and lounging on tatami, this place could suit you. It has a Showa era atmosphere, for better or worse. The toilet in the room doesn’t have a washlet. I booked breakfast with the room, but in hindsight, eating outside seems like the better choice.
