The staff sent repetitive messages before check-in over and over, and we stopped counting around the 7th. There was no lobby, lounge, or anywhere to sit and catch your breath on arrival. The atmosphere felt somewhere between a scout camp and a silent retreat run by hall monitors. The room was a small, stuffy, viewless box, with nowhere for a suitcase except the floor. There were only four hangers, and no TV. Calling it tatami-style feels generous. The breakfast sign says “Stay for breakfast,” but the food was hard to eat for anyone born west of Tokyo. Most Japanese friends I mentioned it to also found it challenging. They refused to issue a proper receipt, which seemed suspicious and is also technically illegal. This overpriced, joyless stay in one of Kyoto’s most overrated and overrun districts was the low point of our Japan trip. If you care about peace, dignity, or basic competence, stay somewhere else.

Every dish at the hotel dinner was full of flavor and beautifully presented. The chef’s care and attention showed in each carefully made plate. It was a refined meal and a memorable experience.

I chose this hotel because breakfast was the main thing I wanted. But at check-in, I was told my booking didn’t include it. The confirmation email had a document attached that clearly said breakfast was included, and since the rooms and prices shown all seemed to include breakfast, I hadn’t thought to double-check. Maybe it was misleading advertising, poor communication, or a mix-up with Agoda. Either way, it felt like the responsibility was put on the customer. Absolutely ridiculous.

Breakfast is worth making time for, with beautifully presented dishes and amazing flavours. The hotel itself is lovely, and the staff are welcoming and helpful. The main Arashiyama sights are only a short walk away.

It’s a decent hotel, though we thought breakfast was included in our reservation and found out it wasn’t. If you get hungry, there isn’t much very nearby apart from a Ministop about an eight-minute walk away.
