On 27dec2025 there was no snow that day, but the region covered in snow was still beautiful, like a fairy tale. The staff were attentive and warm, and I really appreciate their hospitality. The mixed outdoor bath has lovely scenery, so don’t miss it or be shy about trying it. The onsen is only kept warm, but will get hot. Be careful driving up to the Ryokan: the road is narrow and icy. Make sure your car has winter tyres. A 4wd is preferable. I rented a 2wd with winter tyres, and it was driveable, but it took skill and careful driving. Highly recommend.

We stayed from 25 to 27 October and loved the food, the onsen, and the view. All the staff were absolutely amazing and friendly, and we’re really glad we chose this place. A special thanks to Miss Yumi! She was the BEST, so thoughtful and sweet. Thank you for everything. Big hug from Portugal!

The milky-white hot spring mineral deposits is lovely, and the sulfur smell is strong enough to make you wonder why the hot springs back home, which are volcanic too, don't smell that way. The springs themselves were great. Getting here for just a day is the hard part. The shuttle only runs twice, at awkward times relative to the spring opening hours, so you really need a rental car or a very generous friend. I gave the day-trip a try so you don't have to. I'd stay overnight and visit the nearby slopes instead. That makes better use of the time this far into the mountains.

The kaiseki dinner was so generous we couldn't finish it, and breakfast was delicious too. They even served rice porridge heated with local hot spring water. The room was beautiful and roomy, and the staff were wonderful. We stayed one night, 8-9.4.2025, and the onsen was a trip highlight. The water felt great on the skin, with a beautiful blue color and a sulfur smell you could notice as soon as you got off the bus. The hotel is a little older, but that suited us since we wanted a traditional Ryokan. We loved Awanoyu, and my mom said she nearly cried from happiness. Thank you for everything, Awanoyu, and greetings from Finland!

We came for a one-day spa visit before check-in at another hotel nearby, mainly because of the mixed-gender outdoor onsen. Non-guests can enter from 11 am, which is when we arrived, but it was already quite busy. Everyone was naked because the water isn't transparent. I saw one woman with a towel. There are lots of signs banning photos, which makes sense with the space so crowded. It costs 1000 yen per person and 800€ for the towel. The hotel is outside the village center. We took a bus there, then walked about 10 minutes back. That walk felt a bit scary because the road had no sidewalk. It was a nice way to pass the time, though I'm not sure I'd return or stay overnight.
