Guest House Matsumoto Hanare

The host was a very kind, patient elderly man. He tried to speak Japanese through his translator device and translate into English, and offered to carry our heavy luggage upstairs, though my partner declined. He shared useful tips, including nearby restaurant opening hours and when to see the cherry blossoms at Matsumoto castle. There were just three rooms in the house, so the shared kitchen and lounge area weren't crowded. Our large, spacious room with a balcony was upstairs on level 2. The shared bathroom is on level 1, and there are toilets on both levels. The morning sun was very bright because there were no curtains. We could hear footsteps, and the person in the nearby room, who was Caucasian, spoke loudly past 10pm, which was inconsiderate. Please try not to stomp along the corridor. Futons, a comforter, and a thick blanket were provided, and kept us warm all night. The air conditioner's heater mode didn't seem to warm us, but the thick blankets did. It was a nice, lovely stay. The room was simple, but clean and just right. The host was incredibly kind and helpful, explaining everything through a translator device that let him communicate in your native language. I stayed in June and would definitely recommend this place for a visit to Matsumoto and Kamikochi.

The owner is so kind, and you can tell the guest house is really well cared for. A great place to stay.

I spent five nights here at the end of September and had a really pleasant stay. The owner did their best to communicate with guests who speak little or no Japanese, and was very helpful. I’d happily stay here again on another trip to Matsumoto or Nagano.
