Uchi Matsushima Guesthouse

There's a great location near the JR station and the famous sights, with stores right outside the guesthouse. My room was just right, with a heater and a clean bed. The owner was warm and hospitable, and speaks both English and Japanese well. Strongly recommend!

At around six rooms, the shared bathroom never seemed busy, and the rooms were simple but VERY clean. Eiju gave me a thorough tour when I arrived and was happy to answer questions. He speaks VERY good English, made me coffee in the morning, and pointed me to an amazing boulangerie down the street for breakfast. The Izakaya he recommended for dinner the night before was perfect. Uchi guest house is in an ideal spot in a beautiful town, and Eiju runs it so well. If I could give the place six stars, I would. Do yourself a favor and stay here.

The rooms were the most modern and finished ones we came across on our trip to japan. The owner was friendly, and we had a nice chat in the evening. There's a lounge with a laid-back bar feel, and he even plays his own LP's there.

We spent four nights at Uchi Matsushima and always found plenty to do in Matsushima. Sendai and Ishinomaki are also easy to reach directly by train, without changing. The guesthouse is a short walk from Matsushima Kaigan station. The owner speaks excellent English and shared lots of tips about things to see and do. He was easy to talk to, and I really enjoyed just chatting with him. The facilities are simple, but clean and well-maintained. Coffee, tea, and hot water are available in the common area. My wife and I usually choose AirBnBs or budget hotels these days, but I'm glad we found this little place and gave it a try. We still have many other corners of Japan to visit, so I don't know when we'll be back near Sendai. If we do return, we'd happily stay at Uchi Matsushima again.
