Chalet La Neige

The setting is beautiful, with direct access to hodaigi ski resort. The place is clean and well cared for, the rooms are warm, and the hot bath is nice. Breakfast was delicious, and the second-generation hosts were sincere and attentive. I hope more people support them!

We’d heard a lot about Chalet La Neige’s food and location from an Australian woman at another ryokan. We called that same day and managed to get a Friday night room. It lived up to the recommendation: the host spoke good English, all the rental gear was available in the chalet, and we didn’t need to go outside to get it. Lift tickets for Hodaigi were ¥3,700 a day, and we could ski to the lift in a few minutes. Dinner at 6 pm was an excellent five-course meal that took about an hour: salmon quiche and salad, cream of chicken soup in baked puff pastry, half a grilled lobster, steak with rice, then baked apple and ice cream. Parking was plentiful and convenient. One night for two people cost ¥12,600 per person with dinner and breakfast; it’s cheaper with more people in a room or a stay longer than two nights, and holidays and weekends cost the same. The rooms were warm. Some rooms have a private toilet, while the shared toilets were clean but smelled stale. The common bath had a large tub, pleasant water temperature and good amenities.

We came back for a second visit after staying here last year. It’s an incredible spot for snowboarding, about a minute from the slopes, and the customer service is excellent in English or Japanese. Yoshino-san was kind, helpful and fun again. She made suggestions, handled our requests and gave us vouchers for the beautiful nearby Onsen, Tarakgawa. We’ll be back, maybe in summer. Highly recommended!
