Minamiaso turned out to be such a great find, with amazing views and not many tourists around. The architecture is so unique, and you can tell the hotel was decorated with a lot of passion and care. The room-only plan is good value, and the common area had plenty of snacks and drinks. The staff were very welcoming. The outdoor bath had a really chill feel, and the indoor one was spacious too.
We had a peaceful night and could fully relax in the private onsen. The resort is low-density and adults-only, and our room was spacious with a great view over Mount Aso. The young man who checked us in was welcoming and helpful, carrying our luggage to the room. It's a room-only resort, so we drove about 15 minutes to a nearby restaurant for dinner. That could be a limitation if you'd rather have a meal plan at the ryokan.
The rooms and private onsen tubs were wonderful, with stunning views of the Aso mountain range. Renovations were going on during our stay, unfortunately, so we couldn't get the full experience with breakfast and dinner. We'll definitely come back.
We've been in Japan for a month, and this was our favorite place to stay. The rooms are big, clean, and gorgeous, with lots of privacy and a fantastic personal onsen. Great amenities and a great price too. Highly recommend.
A complete disappointment. The hotel staff weren't very friendly, and the male staff member serving dinner in the evening had a particularly poor attitude and provided very poor service. The Italian food is overrated. I doubt the chef has experience working in an Italian restaurant. I wouldn't bother visiting this ryokan.
