The location is really good, and the washrooms were neat. It's an old school that's been adapted into dorm rooms. The dormitory felt overpriced, though. There isn't a vending machine nearby, so bring enough drinking water if you're staying.
You can see Nushima and the Kansai area from the bath, and the room was clean with a great view. Wandering around the building was fun, and the food was excellent. I was especially impressed by the Houraku ware. The staff were wonderful, and I had a great time. It's a lovely place to get away from the usual routine, and I'll definitely stay here again. Thank you!
It was too bad I couldn't stay overnight this time. I'd love to come back with friends, and I think kids would enjoy it too, though a group of former elementary school classmates might have the most fun. The building is a closed elementary school that's been renovated, and the old and new features make such a cute, nostalgic mix. I kept blurting out, "So nostalgic! So cute!" There are lots of photo-worthy spots, and I loved that the original details were kept while everything still felt clean. The rooftop view is breathtaking, definitely go up there. The food was healthy and tasty. We had chicken hotpot, though it sounds like there are a few menu options. The chicken was tender, the tofu was delicious, and the rice was cooked in a rice cooker. The rice porridge was good too, and we were completely full. For dessert, Awaji ice cream with salt, olive oil, and homemade basil was both stylish and delicious. The salad with Awaji Island onions and tomatoes grown in the schoolyard was great, and the whole steamed onions were sweet. The staff were lovely too.
I arrived just before 5 pm, after the 4 pm check-in time, but the door was locked and nobody answered no matter how many times I rang. I had booked through Agoda and was given a phone number, but repeated calls went unanswered. The signal was bad, so I kept trying while shivering in the strong seaside wind on a December night. I finally got a call back just before 6 pm. They simply told me they were at the front desk and said to come in, as if nothing had happened. I went in and checked in, still shivering, but nobody apologized. When I asked if there was anyone else there since I had arrived and couldn't get in, they said they seemed to be short-staffed, like it was someone else's problem. I'll never use this place again, and I've told people I know not to use it either.
Golden Week was lively and chaotic, with lots of guests bringing children. It was a different kind of fun to experience a real elementary school again after so long, and it made a great memory. The rooms are just for sleeping, with no refrigerator, which could be a little hot in midsummer, and the shower and toilet are shared. We had time, so we drove about 30 minutes to a hot spring. It was crowded, but the outing was still a rare experience and worth it. The sea is close by, and the rooftop view is amazing. Since the place is a renovated elementary school, it felt nostalgic as an adult. There was a piano and organ in the music room where we stayed, plus instruments in the hallway near the dining room that guests could play freely. The meals were vegetable-based, healthy, and satisfying, with generous use of delicious Awaji Island onions. There's something funny about drinking alcohol inside an elementary school, lol.
