This is a quiet place if that’s what you’re after. We spent two nights and three days in the Yokono room on the second floor. The town, hotel, and surrounding area were all very quiet. Dinner and breakfast were great, and the rest area across from reception had Japanese comic books to read and a massage chair to use. There are three private onsens, available from 7 am until 10 or 11 pm, plus one large public onsen for each gender that’s open all day. The location is a bit tricky, and there isn’t much nearby: the closest convenience store is a 10-minute walk, and there’s a small cafe 500 m away. With a rental car, it’s easy to get to Kurokawa Onsen, Yufuin, and other areas.

The private onsens were all beautiful, and we could use them whenever we wanted. There were so many to choose from on site, which we loved. We had a couple of great nights here. The futons were comfortable, and breakfast and dinner were delicious and nicely portioned. The host and staff were very friendly and made an effort to communicate with us across the language barrier.

We missed the chance to leave a review on Booking, so I’m writing here. It was such a peaceful, beautiful ryokan, and we had a really good time. The onsens were warm and relaxing, the meals were delicious, and we tried so many different things at dinner and breakfast. We also drank sake and enjoyed the lovely place. The owners were polite and helpful. They helped us find a beautiful waterfall, then drove us back from there so we could go to dinner. That was so kind of them. I really recommend visiting and having a good time here.

Our room had a wooden onsen tub, and we could use any of the three family baths without booking. The food was super sumptuous, and the ryokan was clean and neat. It’s a pleasant place in Kumamoto Prefecture, with service, cleanliness, and delicious meals that would make me want to return.
