The food was generous, and none of us could finish our dinner or breakfast. I highly recommend the meal plan. They serve traditional Japanese dishes like nabe, oden, pickles, and sashimi. The rooms were charming, with yukata provided. While we ate dinner, staff came in to lay out the futons, and they left a useful note on using the onsen and wearing the yukata properly. The ryokan is in a small town about 15 minutes by bus from Kurokawa Onsen, and the trip from Kumamoto takes around two and a half hours. They only take cash. The staff were friendly and helpful throughout. Several outdoor family baths are outside the main building. You don't need a reservation, just go in and lock the door behind you for privacy.

The scenery isn't as picturesque as Kurokawa Onsen, but it's still quite lovely. The river-facing room was large, and there were several private baths beside a small stream right in front of the hotel. There's an indoor private bath open 24 hours, though we didn't need it. Kurokawa center is a 2 km walk, or 3 km if you take the other side of the river. I chose this place because nearby kurokawa onsen had no reasonably priced options, and if you're coming by car, it's ideal.

The baths are huge and the water temperature was just right. A great onsen at a reasonable price. If you're a Torajirou fan, it appeared in one of the movies. Well worth a visit if you're nearby.
