I asked to move my booking because a typhoon warning was in effect, and said I would rebook for a later date with better weather. They wouldn't allow it, and I feel like they just kept my money. The forecast kept showing an 80% chance of rain throughout the weekend. The typhoon was eventually averted, but I had to decide before I could know whether it would be safe to go. I checked the forecast several times and offered to book again when conditions looked better. I've never dealt with a property this inflexible. As a local, I would have spent the money there later anyway. They could have received my 5-star review and the 4,000 yen eventually, but the dispute over keeping my 3,800 yen has been ridiculous.

I met a couple of friends from Europe at this hostel, and we exchanged contact details in case we run into each other again in Southeast Asia or in their home countries. It was a great experience, and I'm already looking forward to coming back, seeing them again, and surfing. It's a very international place, with lots of young backpackers sharing tips about where they're headed next. Some people plan to stay only a few days, then extend because the town is calm and good for surfing and relaxing.

The owner and staff were so kind and ready to help, which made the stay easy. It's also a great base: only a few minutes on foot to the station, cafes, izakayas, the beach, and Aoshima Island. There are several kinds of rooms, and the kitchen, bathrooms, and rooms are cleaned daily. Surfboards and bikes are available to rent at budget-friendly prices. The atmosphere is friendly and international, with a nice mix of time to relax and things to do. For the area, it feels like a really good deal.

I left feeling unsure the sheets and pillowcases had been laundered. The dorm sliding door also made a racket every time it was opened or shut and could use some maintenance. I won't be staying here again. Take this as a warning.
