The pictures don’t capture how nice it is. We should’ve booked more nights, and I’d highly recommend staying here. The drive to Chiiori is a little hair-raising, but it adds to the experience. I have strict dietary needs because of a chronic illness, and the owner accommodated them perfectly.

Natural mountain water, a warm and quiet atmosphere, and a beautiful, elegant house made this an unforgettable stay. Chiiori is a landmark and the second oldest house in Iya. It feels like staying in a museum, while still being a luxurious way to experience an authentic farmhouse.

I came here unexpectedly fifteen years ago while riding a motorbike through Shikoku. They welcomed me with tea, invited me to cook dinner with the volunteers, and let me stay for a reasonable price. Back then, the house was in its old condition. Today I came back hoping just to show my wife the place made famous by the book. A staff member coldly told us we couldn’t even go inside without a reservation. The outside has been replaced with modern glass housing, and there’s gas heating inside. Staying here now costs twice as much. It feels like it’s become a gentrified, expensive hotel. I understand everyone has to make a living, but the place seems to have lost its soul. Thankfully, the old house farther down the hill is now a cafe, where you can see an authentic interior, plus a TV, since this is Japan.
