The drive up through the valley was really scenic, though we saw plenty of buses on the way too. We rented a car and were glad we did. We booked six months ahead for our honeymoon, and this ended up being our favorite ryokan stay in Japan by far, an easy 10/10. The kaiseki meals were fantastic, service was excellent, and most of the staff spoke English really well. There seemed to be only a limited number of rooms, so both nights we had the outdoor onsen to ourselves.

The outdoor bath, made of rock and looking out toward the mountains, was stunning. There are indoor and outdoor onsen baths at this ryokan in the heart of the Iya Valley. Our room was spacious, spotless, and had tatami mats. The staff were so welcoming, and the traditional dishes at the kaiseki dinner were delicious, easily five-star food. For everything on offer, it wasn’t expensive. Such an incredible stay.

My only regret is that I could stay just one night. I booked a western and Japanese-style room at Iyanoyado Kazuraya, and it was fabulous. The bedding was so comfortable, and I was pleasantly surprised when they brought out a third bed. Staff were friendly, helpful, and clearly took pride in their work. I loved the onsens, especially having an outdoor one and a cold plunge pool. My skin even felt like it was getting silky smooth. Dinner was delicious, and the tempura was the best I’ve ever had, better than the well-known Tokyo shops that specialize in it. I hope to stay here again next time I’m in Iya valley.

The location near the famous vine bridge couldn’t be better, and we really enjoyed our time here. Our room was gorgeous, modern in feel but styled traditionally, with an amazing view. The food was delicious, and the staff struck a nice balance between being professional and relaxed and personal. The onsen was lovely too. We stayed two nights and wholeheartedly recommend it.

We had such a lovely time here. The views, comfortable rooms, and delicious food were all highlights, and the hospitality was top-notch. It’s a family-run onsen in a great area for exploring a very authentic part of Japan.
