The host stayed in touch and was very responsive when weather and transport problems pushed our arrival much later than planned. The cottages are only a few minutes by car from the ski resort, with a 7-11 just down the road. We stayed in a cottage with a private onsen. It had plenty of supplies and comfortable beds, though the bedroom could use better outlets. The sign called the bits floating in the bath “flowers,” but we weren’t convinced. At least they seemed fine with draining and refilling the tub. We only spent one night, but it’d be a good place to hole up for a few days of skiing. Our one real hassle was parking: we were told to use the cottage driveway because snow might slide off the roofs, then a man banged on our door before 9 a.m. and demanded we move the car. I wish they’d told us to park somewhere else.

The private onsen was a lovely way to unwind after a day on the slopes, and having our own bathroom was great. We spent four nights here and had loads of space, a very clean room, plus a fridge, kettle and kitchen area. The location worked really well too. Staff from Ryokan Okayama next door drove us up to the village in the van, and we could walk back down. Check-in is there as well. Such a good base for a snow trip, I’d happily recommend it.

The four cottages sit quite close together, so you might feel a little self-conscious having a barbecue on the open deck. Inside, though, the sound insulation was pretty good, and we didn’t need to worry about our dog’s barking disturbing anyone. He slept soundly at night. We chose a cottage because he’s skittish and tends to bark, and it worked out well. The rooms were new and clean, the hot spring ran continuously, and there were plenty of cooking utensils and dishes. We ate convenience-store food for dinner and had breakfast in the main building’s restaurant. Breakfast was tasty and quite luxurious, though 3,000 yen per person felt a bit steep. The bath had a strong flow and overflowed quite a lot, so make sure the bathroom door is shut properly or water can leak into the changing area. There are two sleeping spaces for two people in the loft, but one is so low that you hit your head even sitting up. It’s like a little kids’ hideout.

Being able to park right beside the cottage was a big help with all the gear that comes with travelling with a dog. The place was well cared for, with no noticeable smells, and there are dishes, pots and a rice cooker if you want to cook. We brought dinner back, then walked to the bakery at Akakura Kanko Hotel for breakfast. The people at the neighboring Ryokan Okayama used to have a mascot dog, so they were especially kind and understanding about dogs. I love the Myoko area, but until I found this place I hadn’t found anywhere nearby I wanted to stay with my dog, so I’d always gone elsewhere. The cottage was bigger than I expected, the bedroom was comfortable, and the hot spring straight from the source was especially nice. A very satisfying stay. I recommend it. *Photo taken before check-out

The hot spring water came straight from the source, and we could enjoy it whenever we wanted. Staff were attentive and helpful, too. We were happy with our stay and would love to come again. Our kids were thrilled since our family doesn’t often get to stay in a cottage. Although people in the cottages on both sides seemed to be chatting away, we couldn’t hear them at all. My one small gripe was the kitchen window, which had no curtains. After a bath, it sometimes made getting dressed and heading into the living room awkward. Curtains or frosted glass would help.
