For our first trip to Japan, we loved kofukan. It's a characterful, 100-year-old hotel that's been run by the same family for four generations. Masa and his wife made us feel very welcome. We chose the cheapest Japanese-style room, with shared bathrooms: the toilets are in the hallway and you shower in the onsen. It was a little rustic, which was part of what made the place special. Thanks for having us, Masa 🙏

This family-run place is a bit away from the main skiing area, but you can ask for a ride to any of the major 4 ski areas. The room had one of the best views, and the whole place felt clean and warm. The onsen was well stocked. The family clearly puts in a lot of effort, from changing the towels and yutakas every day to trying to handle last-minute meal requests. Everyone does their best for guests, and they deserve a higher rating!

The food was tasty and nicely prepared, and after snowboarding it was lovely to soak in the ryokan's onsen, which has both an indoor and an outdoor pool. The owner was friendly and offered shuttle rides to nearby ski resorts and myokokogen station. A cozy, authentic Japanese ryokan stay.

The inn is quiet and relaxing, surrounded by a beautiful mountain landscape. Inside, there's some damage, though it's still decorated beautifully and feels serene. The meals were delicious, filling, and nicely plated. They made vegetarian meals for one of us, and he got just as much food and quality as everyone else. Staff were polite and did their best to help in English. If you're a white American like me, you might want to bring your own pillow. We found the stay very satisfying and would happily do it again. The quiet mountain town has a gift shop and a coffee shop by the train station, and everything was great value.

A peaceful, traditional Japanese place to sleep, eat, and unwind in the Onsen baths. It's about ten minutes from the station, and they offer a free shuttle pickup. The friendly owners speak English and are very service minded. The public baths are amazing, with a lovely view of nature, and you can rent a private Onsen for 2200 yen. The rooms are traditional and a bit dated, which adds to the charm. Open the window and you get fresh mountain air. The restaurant food is very good and reasonably priced.
