Chuoukan Shimizuya Ryokan

We spent five days here and really enjoyed how central it is in Nagano town, with lots of shops and places to eat nearby. It’s a bit of a walk from Nagano Station, though. The elderly couple who own the ryokan took great care of us. We arrived late, but they still checked us in, explained the rules, and showed us around. They clean the rooms, and you can pay at checkout. There’s a free water dispenser, a communal bath with set entry times, a washer but no dryer, WiFi that can be hit or miss, and free yukata PJs. A lovely stay. 10/10, would come back. Stay here if you want to go back in time! ❤️❤️

A lovely old inn with an interesting feel. The owners are wonderful, the rooms are just right, and the baths are so restorative. A must-stay if you’re in Shinshu.

We visited in February during very cold, snowy weather, but the room was already warm and cozy when we arrived. The staff had switched on the heater beforehand and gave us yukatas. The inn feels like stepping into a Miyazaki movie, with a beautiful traditional setting and gender-separated baths that resemble an onsen. Its location is great for visiting Zenkoji Temple, and Arteria, known for its delicious melonpan, is nearby. The owners were incredibly kind and offered help right away when we ran into a problem with our Booking reservation, despite the language barrier. This was a unique stay, and one I’d recommend to anyone visiting Nagano.

The older couple who run this inn are incredibly sweet and put so much care into making guests feel welcome. Our rooms were spotless, cozy, and beautifully kept. The place has a warm, nostalgic feel, and every detail seems lovingly cared for. It’s one of the cleanest, most welcoming places we’ve stayed. I’d give it more than five stars if I could. I hope others appreciate the special atmosphere the owners have created.
