The onsen was wonderful after our snow-filled days in Nagano. I loved the stone details and mini waterfall, and the water was just right. The staff were great, asking politely about our adventures, doing their best to make the stay pleasant, and leaving extra supplies for us when we got back in the evenings. We stayed two nights over Christmas. Nakaoyama Onsen was out of the way, but having a car made it easier to reach our daily destinations. We ate in the Nagano area, so we didn’t try the food at the Onsen. There was heavy snow and ice, but the staff kept the access road maintained regularly. The rooms are showing their age, and the beds and pillows were like rock slabs, which made sleeping hard. I’d bring your own car and pillows. The rooms may be outdated, but the service is amazing and the onsen was so relaxing. I’d highly recommend it for an affordable traditional Japanese inn near Nagano.

The family-friendly touches made this an accommodating stay, and the laundry machines are useful for a longer visit. English manuals are available in the room, parking is available, and they have toys and baby seats. Payment is cash only, which feels out of step with how people travel today. Would I go again? Perhaps. The cherry blossom bath was the reason we came to Nakaoyama Onsen Shousenkaku for one night, and it made the trip worthwhile. Soaking in our private rotenburo while petals drifted in the wind was a quiet, memorable kind of luxury. Spring seems like the time to come, and I’d book the room with the sakura bath. Dinner was another bright spot: a comforting chicken nabe with a deeply flavorful broth, plus local specialties. The sake tasting set was a little uneven, but still fun to explore. The ryokan has beautiful bones, but it’s showing its age and maintenance seems neglected. The “Omiai” onsen, with its romantic story and shrine, now feels forgotten. The tiny altar is nearly collapsing, and the magic has faded. Service was polite but impersonal, and the place lacked the warmth or personal touch I’d hoped for in a countryside inn. I’d usually rate a stay like this three stars, but the cherry blossom experience added a star. 🌸

We had two amazing evenings here and chose a room with a private onsen. I’d recommend it 100%. While it’s a little out of the way from Nagano station, you can take the train to Imai station and walk or get a short taxi ride. From Nagano Station, a taxi takes 20-25 minutes and costs about ¥4000-5000, depending on your trip. The staff were lovely and very helpful. We were lucky to visit during snowfall, and enjoying the onsen while watching the snow come down was out of this world.

The food here is epic. Plan ahead and arrange to have dinner and breakfast at the hotel, then enjoy a private onsen or hot tub in the winter. English is limited, so bring Google Translate. This was our second visit, and they arranged for us to stay in the same room again!

The onsen and food were excellent. I paid extra to use their special onsen room, which has a karaoke system you can enjoy while soaking.
