The receptionists were a bright spot. One offered to haul my heavy suitcase up four flights, which I couldn’t let her do, but I really appreciated it. Another gave me travel advice on my last day and even a luggage scale. The duvet was too warm, so I was glad the first receptionist also found me a small summer blanket. The cabins are a good idea, but with the ceiling open you hear everything in the room. The bed and ladder are both too narrow, and those four flights of stairs are rough with no elevator. The kitchen is nice, though I wondered if it was big enough for everyone. There were no paper towels, a strong food smell on the fourth floor, and lots of noise from the floor above, apparently from people on the fifth using a microwave. There’s nowhere in the shower to hang a towel or clothes. The worst part was a man in the next cabin waking me at 3 AM and again at 6 AM by talking in his sleep. He told me it was my problem and that I should use earplugs, which don’t work. At 6:30 he started making loud yawning noises like a lion. He showed no consideration for anyone else. Guesthouses like this need staff on duty or some way to hold guests accountable. Saying it’s a dorm doesn’t excuse it. I’ve stayed in plenty of dorms where people are considerate, don’t snore, and sleep quietly.

The kitchen was useful, and the hostel’s location by Chinatown, close to the station, worked really well. Casa Blanca was clean, and my bed was super comfortable. The staff were very friendly too. I loved staying here and will come back next time I’m in Nagasaki.

For a good price, you get a little private room with complete privacy and space for your things. My locker was big enough for all my photography gear and laptop. I also liked the shared lounge and kitchen, a welcoming spot to hang out and meet other travelers. There’s coin laundry and a dryer for cheap, and the WiFi was good enough for me to work and make video calls. Check-in is self-service and takes about a minute. You get a code for the hostel door, so there’s no key. Restaurants and bars are nearby, and buses and the tram are within walking distance. Great hostel for the price.

The staff were wonderful whenever I found them, and did as much as they could to help. There’s no elevator, so keep that in mind. I was on the fourth floor. The place felt comfortable and homely, with a cute, clean shared space. Breakfast was basic, just bread, butter and jam, but sometimes that’s enough. If you smoke, the terrace is where you can go.

The location was easily the best part, with popular ramen, a cake shop, and more nearby. I had a private room on the third floor, but the walls are thin and noises carried easily. The owner or staff weren’t friendly at all, and didn’t even say good morning. Maybe that kept guests from interacting much. That was my experience during this stay, anyway, so I hope it isn’t always like that.
