Nagasaki Hotel Yataro

The stay wasn’t terrible or offensive, but it was the worst hotel I’ve stayed in, and I wouldn’t recommend it. Outside my non-smoking room, the hallway smelled strongly of cigarette smoke. Getting to and from downtown Nagasaki was a hassle. Unless you want to climb what feels like a thousand steps through a cemetery, you need a bus or taxi. I tried to eat at the hotel restaurant, but they told me reservations were required. That caught me off guard and meant trekking downtown, since there were no other restaurants nearby. It’s cheap for a reason.

The food at Yataro was a highlight, especially the amazing dinner, and the breakfast was great too. The views were lovely, even from a room listed as having no view, though the viewing platform was the best spot. I also enjoyed both onsen. I’d like to come back when the outdoor onsen is open as well. I’ll definitely visit again next time I’m in Nyagasaki.

Our school trip included amazing meals, and we slept on futons in tatami rooms. It was extremely hot and humid outside, but the air conditioning and dehumidifier were strong enough that we were comfortable.

The decor feels very old, with a late-80s or early-90s look, and the place badly needs an update. Most rooms don’t have a bathtub for Western guests. I’d spend a couple of extra dollars for a better stay, meaning another hotel.
