Comfort Hotel Nagoya Kanayama

I couldn’t get a restful stay because the hotel provided just one pillow, and it was the cheapest, thinnest, hardest one I’ve ever had. When I asked for another pillow or a different one, they refused. It felt inhospitable, and it’s hard to understand ruining a guest’s stay over such a simple request.

On the first night I was on floor 4, the lowest floor, with a north-facing window toward JR Chuo Honsen. The trains screeched so loudly it was very hard to sleep, perhaps because of the sharp curve and/or the old trains. I asked to switch rooms the next noon and got one on floor 9, facing south. Up there, the train noise actually became relaxing, and I slept well. The hotel sits between two tracks, so I’d avoid booking when it’s nearly full, since you’re more likely to be assigned one of the noisy lower-floor rooms.

It’s a good option if you’re trying to spend less, but trains go by every five minutes and shake the whole building, day and night. 🤪

Kanayama Station is right there, and the hotel turned out to be more convenient than a lot of city-center options. The rooms are clean, efficient, and reasonably sized for Japan. Just don’t expect a sumo-wrestler-sized bathtub. Breakfast has a nice mix for miso soup fans and croissant people. It felt like finding a travel cheat code: good value, efficient, and no fuss. I’d absolutely recommend it, worth every yen. 🚄🛏️🍳
