Nagoya Sakae Green Hotel

The staff were kind and tried to help, but the area around the hotel didn't feel suitable for a family. We saw people soliciting on the street, and it was awkward trying to explain it to our kids. The building is old, and smoking is allowed in rooms, which left a strong, unpleasant smell. Our stay fell short of what we expected, so I'd be cautious about those issues.

The location is a real plus, right in Sakae with plenty of restaurants nearby and only a block from the train and bus station exits. The price makes it a good budget option. Our room was decent for a Japanese business hotel, with bright lights, and the elevator had enough room. They also cleaned daily and let us leave luggage in the lobby. The bathroom is small, with a half tub, as you'd expect at this price. The lobby and street can get busy on weekends because there are bars and karaoke places close by.

The beds were comfortable, and getting three beds for such a low price was good value. Still, the tiny bathroom and the sounds of people yelling and other odd noises outside at night made the stay less enjoyable. When I asked for another towel, I was told it would cost extra. The small lobby has a water cooler, but guests are limited to one cup, and staff reprimanded me when I tried filling my bottle. The staff were just okay. We booked because it was near Sakae station, but the nightlife around there isn't great for kids. Also, the TV was on a channel that wasn't really appropriate to watch with family.

The room lighting gave it a homey feel, even though the hotel itself isn't new. Its key and radio have a very retro Showa-era feel, so stay here if that's the atmosphere you're after.
